Who knew learning how to live a sustainable lifestyle could be this much fun?

A HUGE SUCCESS!

Thousands of families took part in our first ever sustainability festival, August 2-3 in Port Gamble. Picture perfect weather, spectacular scenery and an enthusiastic crowd joined 110 exhibitors, dozens of headline entertainers and an outstanding line-up of speakers to celebrate the future and our growing commitment to greener lifestyles.

The volunteer-organized nonprofit event involved dozens of community service and nonprofit organizations, as well as Kitsap County governmental agencies and the U.S. Navy. We enjoyed broad support in the business community.

We are especially grateful to our wonderful sponsors whose generous contributions made it all possible. We also gratefully acknowledge the vision and inspired leadership of Kitsap County Commissioner Steve Bauer, who saw a unique opportunity to involve the whole community in an informative and “fun for the whole family” festival on sustainability.

Organizing the Future Festival required so many hours of work, you might think volunteers are “burned out.” Instead, we’re still glowing with the excitement and thinking about ways to make it even better next year. We ended the Festival knowing we’ve launched a tradition that is certain to grow.

Sustainability is becoming such a familiar term, the challenge is to keep the idea fresh, evocative and meaningful. Our mission is to make learning about it fun -- and we’ve think we’ve made a great beginning.

Stay tuned as our plans evolve for a bigger and better Great Peninsula Future Festival in 2009. We know you won’t want to miss it.
